AGRIGENTO

Agrigento is a city of Sicily with a population of 59.134. This pleasant medieval town, set high on a hill, overlooks both the Mediterranean and the spectacular Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples), a significant ancient Greek site. Founded in 582 BC by settlers from Gela, themselves originally from Rhodes, the town became powerful in the V century B.C. and most of the temples date from then. The Greek poet Pindar described the town as “the most beautiful of those inhabited by mortals”. Sacked and destroyed by the Carthaginians in 406 BC, Akragas, as it was known, was conquered and rebuilt by the Romans in the III century B.C. The newcomers renamed the town Agrigentum and it continued to prosper under Byzantine and Arab rule. On the road between Agrigento and Porto Empedocle is Caos, where tbc playwright Luigi Pirandello (1867 1936) was born. The Greek temples are the obvious reason to come to Agrigento, but don't overlook the town itself.
