ALGHERO

Even though Alghero is the fifth centre of the Island for number of inhabitants, the rhythm of life here is typical of a small village, shaken out of slumber only during the euphoric summer when sun, sea and night-life are a twenty four hour event. Human presence in the territory of Alghero can be traced back lo ancient times and perhaps it is one of the oIdest in Sardinia. The remains of the Green Grotto (Grotta Verde) in the, territory of Alghero date back to around the first half of the V milIennium B.C. Around 1100 started the actual birth of the city, when the Doria families had the permission to fortify their properties. The Doria family Iost the strong-hold of Alghero with the arrival of the Aragoneses. During the expansionistic policy of the latter in the Mediterranean basin it repopulated it anew with Catalan colonials. On the arrival of the Savoy family, the people of Alghero maintained their Catalan dialect along with their standoffishness towards the Sardinian foreigners. During the post-war reconstruction of the city, Alghero was the most important tourist reality of the Island. Different situations impeded the decisive take-off of the city, in the 1980's the tourist period was limited to a few days in August. After years of ups and downs caused by improbable tourist strategies at last the old golden port re-opened its doors. Thanks to the daily flight connection with U.K. (London Stansted), Germany and shortIy with Spain, thank also to the olive oil and the wine production of this area, Alghero has placed itself with authority in Europe and is ready to give everyone its very cordial welcome.
