RAVELLO

Having left the road which goes along the sea, now one climbs up towards the charming village of Ravello, lying in a very suggestive place, from where one can sweep the inlet of Amalfi up to a horizon extremely bright and unlimited. Ravello has its houses irregularly spread over a rocky cliff. From every corner your eyes can sweep the horizon and enjoy wonderful sights. Thanks to its quite favourable and suggestive position, Ravello has become one of the most known tourist centres not only in Italy, but also all over the world. It was at Ravello that a very great romantic man found what he had tried to communicate by his art: the sense of nature, the vital energy, which gives a meaning even to death. May 1880, Villa Rufolo: Richard Wagner stated that he had found the magic garden of Klingsor and so realized his great musical dream of the second act of Parsifal. In Summer in the garden of Villa Rufolo concerts of Wagnerian musics take place in order to honour the great musician of Lipsia, who loved these places so much. Apart from the Rufolo palace, there are other important monuments in Ravello, such as the Cathedral, the Church of Santa Maria at Gradillo, the Church of San Giovanni del Toro and the remains of a XII century castle. THE CATHEDRAL It was built in the second half of the XI century by the first bishop of Ravello. Though it was modified in the XVIII century, the Cathedral is an interesting example of the medieval architecture. The simple facade keeps three oculi and a mullioned window of the original building. It was preceded by a pronaos, of which only four pillars remain. The bronze door, made by Barisano of Trani, is very fine. It was sculptured in 1179 and is divided into 54 panels representing saints and stories of the Passion.
